Basically, there are four primary types of content management systems. These are the homegrown, commercial, open source, and high-end CMS.

A homegrown content management system refers to software created by a single company for use in their business. This type of CMS is designed specifically to meet the company’s needs since they are the only one utilizing the software.

• COMMERCIAL CMS

A commercial CMS is the most common type of content management software. There are different features depending on the creator of the CMS and it cannot be customized.

• OPEN SOURCE CMS

An open source CMS is available to users for free. Aside from being accessible at no cost at all, open source CMS are also customizable since the codes can be changed accordingly. While support is available for open source CMS, it is not as dependable as the customer and technical support you would get from a commercial CMS.

• HIGH-END CMS

High-end CMS are highly reliable. High-end content management systems offer great features but only few can afford such software as it can be very expensive.

Selecting a specific type of content management system is highly dependent on the needs of the company as well as on the needs of the customers. If your company prefers a customized CMS, then a homegrown CMS or an open source CMS are your best choices. A high-end CMS is also a good option if you have no objection to the high cost of such software. If your company does not care about customization, then a commercial CMS would best fit your requirements.

There are many options to choose from and it would be best to compare the features of each one to make sure that you are getting a CMS that will really meet the needs of your business as well as of your customers.
